“Franska buketten” reproduction wallpaper by Lim & Handtryck
This grand rocaille damask is a reconstruction based on a block-printed sample in blue and gray discovered in a broken wooden door on the Ryholm property in Västergötland. The rococo revival wallpaper was presumably installed at the beginning of the 1860s, when the main building on the property was remodeled, the remainder mainly in Empire style. The lively flower bouquet in shades of gray twists and turns elegantly up towards the light, and the style of the flowers appears typical of French wallpapers between 1830 and 1860.

Hovdala slott reproduction wallpaper by Lim & Handtryck
This pattern is named for Hovdala castle in Skåne, a medieval building which has belonged to the Swedish Property Board since 1947. The original wallpaper is dark green and was installed in the 1920s. With its matte colors and the raised texture of distemper paint, the illusion of textile is almost perfect. This type of pattern was common at the end of the 1800s.

“Pionen” reproduction wallpaper by Lim & Handtryck
A wallpaper printed from the original rollers which has presumably been popular multiple times: Lim & Handtryck has rollers in wood with brass fittings, of cast iron, and even of rubber. This leads us to conclude that the wallpaper, whose illustrated peony design seems to be an example of japonisme, was likely first printed in the late 19th century, then during the 20s-30s, and again in the 50s-70s. This style of floral illustration with line shading is found in older printed textiles such as, for example, chintzes from India, which have inspired Western designers including William Morris, the leading figure of the English Arts & Crafts movement.

Filipsborg reproduction 19th century wallpaper by Lim & Handtryck
This pattern is a reconstruction from a fragment found in a boudoir (a ladies’ daytime sitting room) in Filipsborg Manor in Kalix. Diamond patterns were common in late Empire style, which was influenced by the aesthetics of the gothic revival movement as well as by Empire style’s core neoclassical lines and motifs. When roller-printed wallpaper made its technological breakthrough in the 1850s, these aesthetic ideals were still relevant and diamond patterns were extremely popular.
