IF WE WERE VILLAINS
—This is the excellent foppery of the world, that, when we are sick in fortune, often the surfeit of our own behaviour, we make guilty of our disasters the sun, the moon, and the stars; as if we were villains on necessity; fools by heavenly compulsion; knaves, thieves, and treachers by spherical pre-dominance; drunkards, liars, and adulterers by an enforc’d obedience of planetary influence; and all that we are evil in, by a divine thrusting on (King Lear, Shakespeare)
hi kings does anyone want to go on a brown gansey spiral with me
so cossette @laststop said jordan fisher gansey and we both fell down the rabbit hole BUT gansey a POC has SO much potential in so so many ways
1)gansey being adopted (if written well!!) into a white republican family and slowly unlearning his biases (which should’ve been a part of his arc anyway). it would have meant so much to see him not only unlearn prejudice, but also overcome internalized racism (and quite frankly, much more meaningful than seeing a white boy learning empathy)
2)gansey as a white-passing poc! looking at how gansey has a lot of privilege bc of his being white-passing and extremely rich. learning to deal with the fact that despite his privilege, it’s still extremely frustrating when people assume that he’s white, or erasing his identity, and learning that he’s allowed to be upset about that. him dealing with the fact that yes he’s not exempt from racism obviously, but feeling like he has less of a right to speak out about it/be upset by it because he has it easier than more visible POC.
3)half-white gansey. struggling to connect with his identity, and either side being diminished because he’s either too white or not white enough. also him dealing with his white parent being subtly racist at times, or his other white relatives, e.g grandparents, being racist. and because of how he grew up, he ends up internalizing a lot of it, and i think that along with unlearning his biases for other poc, it would be great to see him unlearn the biases he had for himself, and the other part of his identity. growing up suppressing his culture but slowly learning to be unashamed of who he is.
as well as more general things! gansey sometimes not really realizing he’s privileged because “oh i’m a poc how can i have privilege” but after connecting with blue slowly beginning to realize the different ways these things intersect. also, gansey often puts on a mask in front of others, and this could really tie in to how a) many cultures of color often have a borderline obsession with image and “what will people say?” and b) poc often inadvertently end up being spokespersons for their entire community. gansey being extra conscious of how he acts in public, because he knows that it will be taken as a reflection on his entire community. especially with how high-profile his life can be ‘
