“One of the very first things that George said was, ‘How are we gonna do a PG burn?’ Even if you stylize it a little bit you still have to make it quite graphic in order to make it really look like a fresh burn, because when we see it it’s just happened. So I went back to him and I said, ‘How much can we get away with here and how nasty can we make it?’ And he basically just said, ‘Do what you have to do.’ So I’m amazed, I think this is some very dark imagery for a Star Warsfilm.”

Christensen will spend nearly all of today in his burned-to-a-cinder prosthetic, or “toasty Anakin” costume. The suit is impressive, with exposed veins and pieces of charred flesh, but he describes wearing it as “being in a wet suit filled with gooey stuff.” As he smokes a cigarette in his fried-flesh outfit, Hayden couldn’t be more of an anti-tobacco public service announcement.
