#KatherineCrabapple is so scab-prone yet scab-tolerant that its bark is one big beautiful canker. This young grafted branch is growing happily, no dead bits, but the bark already looks ancient. First year wood is smooth, but has plenty early scab legions. Note the contrast with the smooth Rome Beauty bark below the graft union.
This bark, plus its thin twiggy growth, show #bonsai potential, so I’ve root grafted a couple scions.
