The old McGraw Hill building on West 42nd Street off Eighth Avenue was completed in 1931 by Raymond Hood who also designed the Daily News building. The building has distinctive blue-green terra cotta tiles and has a horizontal orientation the way the brickwork is designed.

The building sits outside the main business district because the zoning of the time did not permit it to be built east of Eighth Avenue because they printed the magazines there, which was considered a “factory” use
