I’m Francisco Martins, a Portuguese photographer, and for several years now, I have been working on a project called #LongIsBeautifulProject dedicated to long hair in the masculine.

I had long hair myself and and always felt pressure to cut it short coming from pretty much everywhere but never really understood the reason why my hair’s length bothered so many people. I started looking into the history of long hair and decided to start this project that celebrates long hair.

Many societies, especially ancient ones believed that hair was more than just dead cells with aesthetic purposes. Some feel that long hair gave Native Americans certain sensory abilities, acting as a sort of antenna, much like whiskers on a cat. As an example, when our hairs stand up on the back of our necks when we’re in danger or feel threatened as a reflex of something we detect with our other senses, an unconscious perception as if the hair is sending us a warning.

It has also been considered by many as an extension of our thoughts (I find this extremely poetic) and associated with the 6th sense - that in modern days are usually more attributed to women.

In ancient civilisations, having your hair cut by oppressors was a sign of defeat and humiliation, while long hair meant unconquerability and was therefore considered very masculine.
