It is a truth universally acknowledged (IMO) that the 1995 BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice is the worst version I have ever seen.
Can we all pls agree that Mary Bennet really didn’t do anything wrong? I mean, she was a little pretentious and anti-social but is that it? Cause that doesn’t justify to me why she’s treated with such disdain from literally every other character including her own family. Lizzie and Jane are a slight exception but that’s because they weren’t outright assholes to her. Both Mary’s parents pretty much just straight up ignored her and since she doesn’t fit in with any of her siblings is it really so strange that she found her own interests and strengths and focused all her energy on them? Wouldn’t you be kind of bitter if literally, no one seemed to like you or care about your interests? Especially at like 18 years old? I know that she’s overlooked all the adaptions because she wasn’t an overly important character in the books but how her story ended always sat wrong with me. She just continues to live with her parents while Kitty often stays with Lizzie and Jane? And that’s supposed to suit her just fine? The same parents that either belittled her (without doing a thing to try and amend her behaviour mind you) or just ignored her? That’s really all she’s gonna get out of life?
Mr. Darcy’s just a snob like that. Just lumping Mary in like that when didn’t really do anything wrong!
