Moebius: The proposition to do something in Cherbourg has been going on for 2, 3 years.

And then it connected to my personal history when I took my first trip to Mexico on a passenger ship. Being on the deck and you’re moving away from the pier and people wave their handkerchief (laugh). It was the notion of travel and displacement.

The pieces presented in this exhibit represent not necessarily a journey but a departure. All of a sudden I feel there is sort of a metaphor for moving away from the pier toward the unknown.

[Monumental formats for the exhibit]

This work on enlarging is something completely new for me and very exciting. I feel it’s taking me in a different direction. Since I’ve seen the enlargements, I’m impatient, very excited by the possibilities and all kinds of lucid dreams.

10 years ago on this day we lost the artist who defined early Heavy Metal more than any other—and also defined Métal Hurlant for that matter—Jean “Moebius” Giraud. Moebius was an extraordinary artist, whose images were always elegant yet never simple. He was truly a visionary, foreseeing not only the appeal of Heavy Metal (he was one of the four “Humanoïdes Associés” who launched Métal Hurlant) but envisioning the look of science fiction we know from Alien, Blade Runner, Tron, The Fifth Element, and more. This piece was used as the wraparound cover art for Moebius Comics #6, published in 1997 by Caliber Comics.
