#4 Mount Eerie - A Crow Looked At Me
I have listened to A Crow Looked At Me exactly twice. But honestly, I could have put it on this list after hearing it once. This spring I spent a semester trying to write a screenplay inspired by my mother’s death and I came nowhere close to capturing the true emotions of going through an event like that. But Phil Elverum captures it in four lines: “Death is real / Someone’s there and then they’re not / And it’s not for singing about / It’s not for making into art.” Then, over the course of A Crow Looked At Me, he does it over and over again, a poetic, diaristic, barely-music way. It’s the sort of work that makes you gasp and lose your breath. And also the sort that makes you feel like you shouldn’t be writing shitty Tumblr post about it.
