Giants star Jeremy Cameron tops list of AFL’s 100 highest-paid players

GWS Giants star Jeremy Cameron has been named as this year’s highest-paid AFL player by the Herald Sun.

An investigation by the paper into player salaries has placed the star forward at the top of the list of footy’s 100 highest-paid players, with the 27-year-old’s base wage for 2020 sitting at around $1 million.

Cameron, who hails from Dartmoor in regional Victoria, signed a whopping five-year deal with Greater Western Sydney back in 2015, which was set to net him between $1.5 and $1.55 million per year.

However, the COVID-19 crisis has put the squeeze on player salaries – all players across the competition have taken around a 28% pay cut – reducing the 2019 Coleman Medal winner’s wage to $1.16 million.

Cameron edged out 2019 top-earner Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin to steal the top spot, with the Sydney Swans star’s salary coming in at $1.04 million mark, according to the Herald Sun.

Tigers champ and former Brownlow medalist Dustin Martin took out the list’s fourth spot with $882,000, however, his overall earnings are estimated to be significantly higher than his base player wage due to a reporter seven-figure endorsement deal with underwear giant Bonds.

Carlton’s gun recruit Jack Martin rounded out the top five richest players with $828,000.

Meanwhile, Collingwood’s Brodie Grundy, who from next year will undoubtedly be laughing all the way to the bank after he signed a reported $7 million dollar deal to stay with the Pies, sits at number 100 in the list of the game’s highest earners.
