Due to the utilidor system running under the Magic Kingdom, large trees were constantly transplanted out of Fantasyland. This highly frustrated Imagineers, who felt Fantasyland should feel more like a forest and provide shade from the hot Florida sun. Their wish came true with the Fantasyland Expansion, which will feature an Enchanted Forest portion, themed to be the outskirts of Prince Charming and Cinderella’s kingdom. It will be home to Under the Sea - Journey of The Little Mermaid, Ariel’s Grotto, Be Our Guest Restaurant, Enchanted Tales with Belle, Gaston’s Tavern, Bonjour! Village Gifts, and eventually the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. Most importantly, there is no utilidor system running under the area, which means trees may grow as big as they’d like!

The Grand Opening of the “New Fantasyland” will take place December 6, 2012.
