The Yōmeimon of Nikkō Tōshōgū is famous for its magnificence, but an ancient superstition fueled the belief that completing it might lead to the collapse of the Tokugawa regime. To avoid this inauspicious outcome, builders deliberately installed one of the twelve supporting pillars (the second from the right in the photo) upside down, thus rendering the gate “incomplete.”

Nikkō’s famed Kegon Waterfall. The celebrated cataract in Oku-Nikkō emerges from 1,269-meter-high Lake Chūzenji and  cascades 97 meters to the Daiya River below.
