NIGHT WALKS » CHAPTER TWO — YOU, TOO, HUH?

MASTERLIST

CHAPTER ONE

•─────────°❋❀°─────────•

He wants to know why I’m sitting here crying? she thought, hugging her knees closer to her chest. Well, random blond boy, it just happens to be the only reaction my body decided to take when finding out that the current chapter of its love life was notthe one where it would find happiness, but instead was met with a sharp pain in the chest.

“It’s really none of your business,” she said, brushing her the longer strands of curtain bangs behind her ears as they flowed into her face because of the breeze. “But if you really must know, I’m living through the worst romance arc I possibly could be.”

“Oh,” he said shortly, before adding, “You, too, huh?”

She glanced up at him with slight shock at his statement. He was now the one staring out onto the water with a far away look on his face. One of his legs was pent while the other was straight, his palms down to keep himself upright on the grassy slope.

“Oh?” she wondered. “Is that why you’re walking around at…” Mimicking his previous actions, she took her phone out and glanced at the time. “2:17 in the morning.”

“Yeah,” he nodded. “It is.”

“Oh,” she said softly, taken aback with his honesty. “So, what’s her name?”

“It’s really none of your business,” he said, but his tone didn’t have even half the ounce of seriousness hers had. His was light, like he was teasing her. “But if you really must know, it’s Nana.”

“You’re a little shit, aren’t you?” the words fell off her lips with a soft chuckle, and she shook her head, taking her eyes away from him.

“Only when I want to be,” he said, folding his hands behind his head and leaning back. “What about you?”

“Kei,” she said softly. “He, too, is a little piece of shit. But gotta love him, right?”

He didn’t respond to her question, which was mainly rhetorical anyway.

Kei—now, it wasn’t like he was trying to be a little shit. In all honesty, Sakai was sure he didn’t even realize what was going on. She was certain he was in absolute oblivion to the fact that his best friend had been crying on the side of a path, sitting in the moonlight next to a random boy who happened to be passing by.

“So, what did this Nana do?” she pondered, giving up all reservations she had previously.

If she was going to sit in the company of some random stranger, what harm could it be to talk? Especially if they never have to see each other again after this occasion.

“Loves someone else,” he shrugged. “And it’s my fault because I couldn’t even tell her how I felt.”

“Oh,” she said. “You, too, huh?”

“That’s also your predicament with this Kei guy?” he quirked up an eyebrow.

She was silent, but she nodded to confirm. So, they were two peas in a pod now, were they?

“He’s my best friend,” she explained, shaking her head, “So, of course there was no way for me to just blurt out to him that I liked him. And it was foolish of me to think that anyone else wouldn’t see what I saw, but have the courage to do something about it. And the worst part of it all is that it’s a girl I know, so I can’t even hate her even if I tried.”

“I guess that’s where our situations differ then,” he acknowledged. “Because the guy Nana’s in love with is a total douchebag—all of her exes seem to be—so I can hate him just fine.”

Their conversation was cut short by his phone ringing. She looked away as he sat up yet again and placed the device to his ear.

“Shin? Hey man, what’s up?” he answered, turning away as he took the call.

Sakai stood up, brushing grass off of her jeans and stepping off of the slope. She glanced back at the blonde boy sitting down.

“You forgot your keys? Okay, okay, I’m on my way home,” he said into his phone.

As he looked back towards the space the girl once took up, he noticed that she was gone. He glanced up at the path to see her retreating body moving away, and decided that it was fine with him if this was just some chance encounter.

“Didn’t even get her name,” he said to himself. “But I sure hope that things end up okay for her and Kei in the end.”

•─────────°❋❀°─────────•

Sakai thought about the blond boy as she got ready to bed, trying to rack her brain for what his name was. She finally settled on the fact that neither of them disclosed that information to the other, and instead, they both just know about their tragic romance arcs and the love interests within them.

She looked at the time that it was when she finally settled into bed, seeing that she only really had four hours before she had to wake up for her morning classes at her college. Sighing, she pulled the covers over her shoulders, and let slumber take over.

“You look like death.”

She almost growled at the tall boy who took his normal spot right next to her, but she settled on a scowl. Kei, tall and blond, but his hair was not anywhere near as spikey as the boy from the previous night. The glare on his glasses normally concealed his honey colored eyes, but from her angle, she was able to see the concern laced within them.

“Had a rough night,” she shrugged, opening her notebook.

“Obviously,” he said. “Your eyes look like you had some kind of allergic reaction.”

Yeah, I did have an allergic reaction. To you, to relationships, to feelings, she said bitterly in her head.

“Tch, you haven’t even finished on the assignment that’s due tomorrow?” he asked her, his eyes glued on her notebook page.

Aside from the header, which said “SHORT STORY ASSIGNMENT” in her grossly neat cursive in a nice calligraphy pen that he was sure took her longer than necessary to write out, the page was entirely blank.

“Haven’t even started,” she replied.

“Yes,thatwas also obvious,” he said. “You’re gonna fail at this rate, but what’s to be expected. It’s not like the Creative Writing major in the room should be able to, I dunno, handle a simple Creative Writing course, right?”

“I’m just feeling like death,” she said, and even her voice held some sort of irritation. “So I need you and your stupid face to shut it.”

“Whatever you want, Princess,” he said sarcastically, and she sneered at him.

But once the professor came in and everyone settled down, she couldn’t stop herself from looking at him from the corner of her eyes with a sad smile.

NIGHT WALKS » CHAPTER ONE — ISN’T IT TOO LATE TO BE CRYING OUTSIDE ALONE?

“Isn’t it too late for a girl like you to be crying outside alone?”

Sakai’s body tensed up at the new voice disrupting her peaceful night walk—which was more of a night cry. Without even sitting up, she wiped her face completely and moved her head up towards the direction of the voice, surprised that he had gotten so close to her without her even hearing his footsteps.

There was a bit too much hair gel that was spiking his blond hair up. He glanced down at her with light curious eyes, but his eyebrows were furrowed down in worry.

“Screw off,” she mumbled between sniffles, falsely making the assumption that the blond would probably attempt to hit on her. “I’m really not in the mood for this.”

“I don;t think I should just leave you laying there at…” the boy trailed off, taking his phone out of his pocket. “Two in the morning.”

She huffed, still sniffling. “Fine.” She turned her back towards the sky. “Do whatever you want.”

She had expected the boy to walk away when he realized she wasn’t going to give him any of her time, but instead, he sat down on the slope quite a while away from her.

She let out an audible sigh. While she was glad she was no longer unable to breathe through her soft cries, she was irritated that she was unable to truly feel her emotions. She found herself unable to cry with him there, but all she wanted to do was sulk in the stupidness that was her love life.

But what was she expecting, being in love with someone that was so untouchable, so unobtainable. Someone who was right in front of her, but so damn far away.

After what felt like eternity to her, but she was sure was only a few minutes passing, she turned her head to him yet again.

“That bandana is stupid,” she blurted.

He had a blue bandana tied around his neck like a necklace. His eyes widened and his jaw dropped at the insult against his outfit, and he pulled the unbuttoned sides of his tan button up in a sorry attempt to cover it. He seemed a lot more flushed and flustered than offended.

“That was a lie,” she added afterwards, knowing that she had just blurted it out for no real reason.

“You’re kinda weird, aren’t you?” he asked her, chuckling softly as he let go of his shirt. “So, why are you sitting here crying?”

She sat up, pulling her knees up to her chest.

NIGHT WALKS » PROLOGUE — LOVE SUCKS

MASTERLIST

•─────────°❋❀°─────────•

“This sucks!” Sakai Miyasaki yelled out into the open sky.

She shoved her hands into the pocket of her pants, making her way towards the route by the water. She sat upon the slope, staring down at the way the moon shimmered upon the surface as the water. From the gentle sound of the calm waves moving, and the soothing rustle of the wind against the trees, she let herself take in a deep breath as she leaned back. Her eyes settled on the starry sky before closing, a sting overcoming them as tears ran down her face.

“Love sucks so much,” she muttered to herself, using her forearm to cover her eyes in an attempt to wipe the oncoming tears.

But she had to admit, a bit of it was her fault.

“Isn’t it too late for a girl like you to be crying outside alone?”

Her body tensed up at the new voice disrupting her peaceful night walk—which was more of a night cry. She wiped her face completely and glanced up towards the direction of the voice, surprised he had gotten so close to her without her hearing his footsteps.
