The Prince Regent even convinced himself that he had been personally present [at the battle of Salamanca], and had led the charge of the 1st Dragoons of the King’s German Legion disguised as Major-General von Bock. ‘Was that not so?’ he once asked Wellington at dinner when he was king. ‘I have often heard Your Majesty say so,’ came the tactful reply. (Fellow diners, though doubtless amused, must have been worried that George IV was about to suffer the same fate as his father. When, after his duel with the Earl of Winchilsea in 1829, Wellington was told that the king had wanted to take his place, the Duke replied that in time he would claim to have done so.)
