Week 2: Dating|Day 10: You try to throw him a surprise birthday party, it is the effort that counts.

Pairing: Obito Uchiha x gn!Reader

“Is he back yet?” You asked Rin nervously as you blew your lungs out to inflate the sixth balloon in your hands that evening.

Rin glanced outside the window and shook her head sideways. “Not yet, but he’s nearly there, though. Kakashi just sent Pakkun back to say that they just left the Training Ground. It should be a fifteen-minute walk back. If he manages to drag it out, then we can get twenty minutes maximum.”

“Alright, I’ll go check on the cake. We must finish soon, otherwise, Obito would find out about the surprise.”

Rin nodded and cleaned the floor, scooping up the popped balloons from being overblown in her hands, rushing to the trash can. Your shared living room with Obito, after hours of hard work, turned into a festive hall with balloons of various colors and photos of baby Obito, Genin Obito, Chunin Obito, Jonin Obito, sleeping Obito, eating Obito, laughing Obito…

You exited through the back door with the cake and Rin turned off the lights. Your heart was beating loudly in your ribs. You felt your hands and feet tremble as adrenaline coursed through your system.

The door unlocked and you saw the fairy lights switching on, followed by Rin and Kakashi singing ‘Happy Birthday’. Quietly, you made your way to the front door and entered with a cake adorned by candles all lit up, tiny flames dancing in the dark. You joined them in the song, slightly swaying to the melody as you stepped closer to Obito.

The Uchiha was still in shock from the grand welcome. You saw him breaking into an appreciative smile as he invited you into his embrace with wide-open arms. Giggling, you urged him to make a wish. The raven-haired closed his eyes and clasped both hands together, halting for a long silence before he blew the candles. Kakashi and Rin clapped enthusiastically and took out the party poppers behind their backs, both pulling the strings at the same time.

What you did not expect was how chaotically it all happened—how quickly did your vision go dim without the candles navigating your way, how loudly did the party poppers explode, how carelessly did your foot misstep on shreds of slippery confetti on the floor, twisting your ankle and falling right on top of Obito. When Rin hurriedly turned on the lights, your nose was red from bumping into his chest and the cake was flat on the ground, cake and cream smashed into an unrecognizable puddle. You groaned and got up, immediately checking if Obito was alright, repeatedly apologizing for ruining the scene. “The cake was…supposed to be my gift.” You worked so hard on learning how to bake one and preparing the surprise.

“It’s fine, Y/N.” Obito helped you up from the ground and wiped your teary eyes. “Your presence here is the greatest gift I could ever ask for already, alright?”
