Super excited to announce that I will be in a group exhibition with the one and only @akemiartand@artofedge! Plantains & Pigments explores our shared Nigerian heritage and our creative works as illustrators and artists.

I am such a huge fan of Akem and Edge. Akem creates these effortless figures in magical environments with vibrant colors, textures, and use of shape. Edge combines ornate line and rich color with such power, subtlety, mystery. and grace.

Once I realized we were all in the Vancouver area I knew that a sacred connection brought us together for a reason. We all have similar backgrounds and inspirations, and seeing where our expression and visual language crosses over and differs is such an exciting journey!

I would love nothing more than for you all to get a glimpse into our world of Plantains & Pigments on June 1st at The James Black Gallery!

Felt antsy about not moving paint around, so here is a small sketch of the one and only @kwaye.Kwa

Felt antsy about not moving paint around, so here is a small sketch of the one and only @kwaye.

Kwaye is one of my top favorites of the past year or so!

Vocals? Smooth, controlled, delicate and powerful and soaring, textured, and such luscious harmonies.

Dancing? The polyrhythms of the diaspora live in Kwaye’s body. It’s joyful to watch. And then his style, his videos, and his colors are lovely. I look at his videos such as What Have You Done, Cool Kids, and Sweetest Life to anchor myself and my art in what contemporary joy and resilience can look like (when I feel like I’ve been drawing too many characters from the spirit world)

The music? Such rich productions and layered songwriting. The music is just so soulful and warm, whether it’s a bop or a mooooood.

Sometimes as an african-queer-intersectional-creator with braids, I get used to micoraggressions that boil down to “Hey! This person is black and creative. They even have braids/locs! You would like them”. So it is such a joy when, the music and creativity truly resonates and touches the soul.

Hello friends! I’ve been hard at work creating some tarot/oracle paintings, and I’m super excited to share the first one with you all on April 25th on Odera.net.

For the Spirit Child collection you can expect prints and originals of some new and some old. It’s been super fun breathing my own life into the major arcana! Mark your calendars, and feed the algoriddim with an offering of your earliest Odera memory

As the year closes, it’s fun to look back at the work that were made and shown in 2021! It was a year of murals, covers, gallery shows, and more. A generative, momentus, and bussy time for #artvsartist

It’s that time of year! I will be sending out a postcard set to my patrons to celebrate some of my favorite paintings and breakthroughs I’ve made in 2021. Visit my Patreon and sign up if you would like to grab a postcard set!

Here is a new illustration I created for Vancouver Writer’s Fest.
A huge shoutout to ZAK design studio for the lovely art direction and design work.

When I heard one of the themes was Black Lives Matter, I had to really anchor myself in a visual solution that honored the movement but didn’t center systemic anti-Black violence and police brutality. With this illustration I wanted to weave together timelines, and imagine our chants and protests as a guiding light amongst the stars.

(…When I type that all out it’s really giving BLM but make it EarthSeed.)

A preview from this month’s video on Patreon. I call these specific explorations Drawing Divinations. I pull a card & do a stream of conscious sketch inspired by said card. It’s been a great way to learn about different practices and systems, and it tricks my brain into not being swallowed by the idea of making a tarot deck.

BGM is by Mr Yohan (who makes some lovely African inspired lo-fi beats)
