Charles Durning passed away Monday. He was a phenomenal character actor, and has been in just about everything, but the thing I remember him for the most is the character Pappy O'Daniel from O Brother Where Art Thou.

The man was one of the best character actors of all time, and although he wasn’t a household name, he was in nearly every great movie of the last 40 years.

Reading his obituary, I found out that not only was he an accomplished actor, but was also an amazing patriot, serving during World War 2 and doing such things as being one of the soldiers who landed on Omaha during D-Day, he was the only survivor of his unit from a machine gun ambush, was one of the very few survivors of the march at Malmedy (Nazis took nearly one hundred POWs, marched them through the woods, and then opened fire on all of them), and also beat a Nazi to death with a rock.

It’s depressing to know that there are very, very few celebrities left with a history like that. When Channing Tatum dies, the only anecdote he’ll have in his obituary is that he used to show women his dick for singles.
