I just had a thought that pertains to some research I did during my last year of gradschool. Smeyer’s portrayal of Bella being included in the Quileute rituals and knowledgable about (falsified and bastardized) folklore and tradition and through Bella’s friendship and the horrific imprinting on Bella’s daughter, serves as representation of the colonizer’s desire to be legitimized as the rightful people of a land.

Update: I have a link to the paper I wrote about this topic. A lot of it is based on  Early American Literature, so the subject may be missing key parts and other appropriate voices who can speak more to the topic.
