this piece depicts the true story of the death of francesca da rimini. despite her father forcibly marrying her to lanciotto malatesta, francesca fell in love with his handsome brother, paolo, instead. lanciotto discovered the lovers when they were exchanging their first kiss and killed them with a single swipe of his sword.
