The relevant Guardian article contains this sentence:

He died after failing to fight an infection.

That just gets on my tits no end. Yes, Sir Patrick died because of his failure. Sure. That has no insulting implications at all.

It wouldn’t annoy me so much, but cancer is often treated in the same way. I think it’s part of some larger inability to accept that some things going on in your body are simply not a matter of choice. It’s not enough that something simply didn’t kill you, you have to be hailed as a hero for being courageous and brave. The implication being that if something did end up killing you, you just didn’t fight hard enough.

Martial metaphors for disease need to die out.
