What most people don’t realize about P1 is what the existence of the Wolvaan spell entails.
For those of you who don’t know, Persona 1 has a neat little spell called Wolvaan (ウルバーン), which only three Personas in the game can use: Cerberus, Loki, and Mot. Wolvaan inflicts an ally with the Beast ailment and can overwrite non-severe ailments if the target is infected by one.
So, what exactly does the Beast ailment do? Depending on the current moon phase, it either gives your parameters a boost or a demerit.
When used during a half-moon, your parameters stay the same. If it’s used when the moon is getting full, then it’ll give you a boost, with the biggest boost during the full moon. If it’s used when the moon is doing the opposite, then your parameters will receive a nasty demerit, with the biggest demerit during the New Moon. It’s very useful for boss fights since it can make your parameters go beyond the limit of 99.
The Beast ailment is called 獣化 (lit. beast transformation) in Japanese. But here’s the thing, that’s only in the PSP port. The original PS1 version of P1 used many English terms that were changed into Japanese when they brought the game to the PSP, and that includes all the ailments. For example, Charm is called “CHARM” in the PS1 version (all ailments in the Japanese PS1 version were written in capital-letters English) and 魅惑 in the PSP release. Now, what is the Beast ailment called in the PS1 version?
“WOLF.”
That’s it. “WOLF.”
The Wol part of Wolvaan is short for Wolf, and it’s the same for the Japanese name. The ウル (uru) of the spell’s name is short for ウル フ (urufu, lit. wolf). Even the name of the spell in the butchered translation of Revelations: Persona is just “Wolf.”
Here’s the spell in action. It displays a circle with a wolf’s head that turns into the moon, and the icon that indicates the Beast ailment is a moon as well. The characters don’t change appearance because of limitations, but here’s what a character under the effect of Wolvaan looks like in the manga:
They’re werewolves.
The P1 cast can turn themselves into werewolves on demand, even if they become weaker if there’s no moon.
In short: sooner of later, P1 will get a proper remake instead of a port with better UI, some quality of life changes and minor balancing fixes that end up not really fixing the game’s balance. When will it happen? I don’t know. Sooner or later, people will get tired of the formula used in modern Persona games and will demand something different, and P1 will be there, begging for a modernization.
So when that happens… Atlus better keep Wolvaan in the game. We all deserve to see this in full HD glory. Whether they want to make the transformations grotesque or just add ears+tail+some fur, please keep it. You can bet people will complain that Atlus is “pandering to the furries” and whatnot, but I don’t care, keep Wolvaan in the game.
Heck, if they want to bring it back in P6 instead of a P1 remake, I’ll be satisfied. Just give us werewolf Persona-users again.
so yeah i remembered that the 3 series’ are in different times but still in the same universe. this also means that makoto yuki/minato arisato’s soul is still fighting nyx in the seal. behind that door… he’s still not resting in peace… even after p5 ends….
