There is a difference between compulsive lying and lying on the spot. Compulsive lying is usually defined by a mental disorder. The latter specifically highlights situations where lies are appropriate and/or necessary to cover something of importance. Compulsive liars will lie at any given time and for any reason, whether trivial or important.

The latter is situational and is something of an art. Lying on the spot, and doing so effectively, depends more upon actual circumstances than imagination. Incorporating actual situations and events into an unexpected lie is almost essential to its believability. The imagination is utilized when choosing a believable situation and compiling the lie in a short amount of time.

Too much explanation, or too many uncommon events tend to expose a lie. Lack of creativity, contrary to popular belief, comes from the expectation that your listener will simply accept that so many extraordinary coincidences just happened to occur at the same time.

So, in short, realism and simplicity are key. Uncharacteristic lack of eye contact, such as staring at a spot next to your listener’s head, or nervous body language are easily recognizable signs of a lie. Casual eloquence is also extremely important. Stumbling over your words indicates you are thinking too hard about what you’re trying to say. However, speaking too rigidly also indicates nervousness. A middle ground, not too contrived, but not too casual, is a safe route. And of course, there is moderation. Knowing when and when not to lie is crucial, lest you become a pathological liar and lose the art entirely by developing a mental disorder.
