On this day in the year of 1929, “Popeye the Sailor” debuted in cartoonist E. C. Segar’s comic strip “Thimble Theatre”. The character would serve in the U.S. Coast Guard during the 1930s and later enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII. On screen, Popeye was voiced by actor Jack Mercer who actually served in the U.S. Army.
