Seven had known her entire life that she was food.

It had never been hidden from her. Her owners had always been very forthright regarding her purpose: she supposed it would be useless to try to hide it. Hell, she didn’t even have a *name.* “14-247-7” (which she usually shortened to just “Seven,” especially when among her sisters) was a designation of her farm section, litter number, and birth order. She was, as far as the rest of the world was concerned, livestock.

It wasn’t that she was mistreated. Far from it: her owners went out of their way to take good care of her. She had comfortable quarters and all the food she needed. She even had access to a library of books and movies to keep her entertained, and plenty of opportunities to socialize with her fellow rabbits, as well as the other animals on the farm. She wasn’t allowed to leave, but she more or less had free reign of the compound, and had never felt like a prisoner here.

But her purpose had always been clear. She was kept on a diet and exercise regimen that, while not strenuous, was strict – to preserve the correct flavor and tenderness of meat, she assumed. Occasionally predators would be brought to the compound to inspect her or her companions, and often, soon after that, multiple rabbits would be taken and not seen again. Everyone knew where they had gone. It was not something to fear: it was their fate, their destiny. Their purpose.

So why was Seven’s heart beating so fast now?

It hadn’t been like this a few days ago, when that female feline had come to take a look at her. Seven had had potential buyers look at her before, but this one seemed very serious about it – almost salivating as she looked Seven over. So she hadn’t been surprised when she was told a few days later that she, along with the rest of her litter, had been purchased by a restaurant.

And she had kept her calm while being prepared by the restaurant staff. They were firm, but gentle and professional with her, placing her on the platter and carefully brushing her with spices, arranging sauce and vegetables around her and asking her to try her best not to mess up the plating. She had hoped that she would be a satisfying meal, but she got the feeling that she shouldn’t worry: these chefs knew what they were doing.

But now, she was on the table, looking up at the predator that she was soon going to be a part of, and her heart was pounding. Her predator, as well as the others at the table, were enormous, absolutely dwarfing her in size even while seated. Even though she had known this was coming, had known it all her life, she couldn’t just be calm. Seven sat attentively, every muscle in her body tensed. She had never felt more *present* in a moment than she did now.

Seven had read in her books that some predators hunt “wild” prey, that rabbits who hadn’t been raised on a farm would try to run from a pred. Perhaps there was some instinctual fear, something that couldn’t quite be entirely stamped out, causing her heart to flutter so. She was alone here, her sisters either taken to other tables or perhaps kept for later, surrounded by creatures much larger and stronger than her. It only made sense that her instincts would scream that she was in danger.

Or perhaps it was a combination of curiosity and excitement. She realized that, though this was the moment her whole life had been leading to, she had no idea what it was going to be like. It’s not like there could be a dress rehearsal. Would her predator be gentle? Would she be roughly shoved down their gullet? Would she be going down whole, or was she to be chewed to pieces first?

No sense worrying about it now: in mere moments, she was going to find out. Her predator’s eyes were upon her, their stomach rumbling. Her destiny was coming fast.

And it was hungry.

Welcome to our restaurant! It looks like your meal is ready. Don’t worry, our food is willing, but also guaranteed to squirm delightfully throughout the entire meal!

A picture I kind of drew at random, and then ended up coming up with a whole backstory for based on the random pose and expression I picked.

Ask me questions on my Curious Cat! Feel free to ask questions to either me or one of my characters.
If you’re so inclined, I’d much appreciate it if you’d buy me a coffee!
