Been up all night writing chapter 7 of Gravity’s Ascension. Here’s a taste of RR before I succumb to the siren’s song of sleep.

“I’m telling you,” Rukia insisted in Renji’s earpiece. “There’s no way it can’t be them.”

“Love, you’ve been on this for days.” He said, keeping his eyes fixed on their target. “Until they slip up, we can’t go in guns blazing. This can’t be done messily. If it is who we’re at least ninety-nine percent sure is, they cover their tracks expertly. This reconnaissance is to gather information, not to detain.”

“This asshole deserves to see the business end of my katana shoved in their belly,” his wife seethed. “Nearly killing one of my closest friends is a great lack of judgment. I will give it back threefold.”

“Easy now,” Renji warned. “I’m not entirely comfortable with you being out here split off from me, Snow.”

“Wolfie, I’m carrying a pup, I’m not broken.” Rukia muttered.

“Well that’s not in question.” He soothed. “Your moods are what are worrying me. We’re in the early stages. Everything is haywire.”

“Is that why I’m stuck in the ‘safety net’? So you can protect your pregnant wife?” Rukia was turning her irritation on him. He was prepared for that. They’d grown up together and knowing her for twenty years made knowing the signs of her moods easier to navigate.

“No, Snow. I mean, sure. If I could wrap you up in bubble wrap for the next eight months or so, I would. I won’t lie, this is a new development and it’s frightening. Especially with the betrayal of one of our own.” Renji admitted. “But you’re smart and a great fighter. I’m also not dumb enough to think you’d let me dodder over you.”
