In 2013, I began working on #PrettyPeriod and in so doing, I had the privilege of meeting and connecting with hundreds of Black women and girls all over the world, many of whom allowed me to have them photographed. That year, I met a woman named Trisheena, who gave me permission to include photographs of her two daughters, Sasha Ade and Breyan, then 16 months and 4 respectively. Three+ years later, for Breyan’s 8th birthday, Mama gathered her besties, put them in #ProfessionalBlackGirl t-shirts and had a professional photo shoot!
It’s Breyan’s birthday, but it is me who received the gift. Thank you, Trisheena, for allowing me love on your girls, even if from a distance.

SPECIAL EPISODE!
In each episode of #ProfessionalBlackGirl, we’ve been witnessing what it means to move through the world Black and Girl at “professional” levels. Is there a male equivalent to this experience? It’s something I’ve been thinking about (and something that the people have been asking about)! I’m not sure what a #ProfessionalBlackMan is (you know you can’t call brothas “boys,” right?), BUT in my exploration of Black hair culture, I met a man who shared with me his experiences with his hair. And let me tell you, he is definitely a professional!
