A 1945 advertisement for the Northrop P-61 Black Widow, developed by the Northrop Corporation for the US military. The Black Widow was the first operational U.S. military aircraft designed specifically for night interception of opposing aircraft, and was the first aircraft specifically designed to use radar. Carrying a crew of three - pilot, gunner, and radar operator - the Black Widow was also known for its exterior gloss black finish, which made the plane less visible when caught in a searchlight.
