When I have to sing, I think about it, I have to think “OK I have to…” and I practice a few phrases and then do it. I can tell by listening to Aretha Franklin’s records that she just goes and then… it’s effortless. Having said that, I’m sure she will call me up and say “Wait a minute!”.
