The room was filled with mothers, sisters, and brothers crying into their loved ones shoulder. You were nestled against Roan’s chest, hearing all the sounds around you as he kept you close, one hand holding the back of your neck while the other was on the small of your back. Echo was somewhere near you, but she was insignificant currently, all that mattered was him.

Roan felt you start to shake, and then you sucked in a deep breath, trying to stay strong for him. You had faith in him, with every fiber of who you were, you loved him dearly, but the thought of there even being a slight chance he would not come back to you was nauseating. He squeezed you tighter against him, and then pulled you away so that he could see your face, his hands cupping your cheeks. “I’ll always be with you.”

“Why do you say it like you’re saying goodbye?” A tear slipped down your cheek, but Roan’s thumb quickly caught it before it could get far. “You’re coming back to me. You promised, remember?” He smiled and pushed your hair behind your ear, kissing your forehead.

“I remember.” You stare at each other for awhile, afraid to break the silence. “I love you.”

“I love you too.” He keeps you close until the elders announce that it is time. Roan kisses you one last time, his way of saying goodbye without saying it, you can feel it in how slow it is, how he takes his time with you. When you begin crying, he looks back at Echo, she puts a hand on your shoulder and pulls you back.

She leans down with an arm around your shoulder. “He has to go, but he will come back.”

You watch helplessly as he stalks towards the door. “Roan, please don’t go.” You step toward him, but Echo wraps her arms around your waist to keep you in place. “Roan!” You scream, fighting against Echo. Kane steps up to help hold you in place while you struggle to get closer to him, to bring him back to you. “Roan! Don’t leave me! I need you, please!” When you no longer hear his footsteps, your body goes limp as you sag against Echo and Kane, crying your sorrows to them, everyone else in the room joining in your pain.

Fires were out in all goblets except Skaikru and Azgeda, although Luna’s fire was still lit. The woman was ruthless, she wanted mercy for no one. You had sunk to the floor long ago, waiting for news, and then it came. Luna was dead. The elders tried to seem happy, but you could tell something else was wrong. They talked quietly, occasionally glancing back in your direction, and finally, one turned with his hands folded and his head bent. “King Roan of Azgeda, yu gonplei ste odon.”

Your brain felt numb, but your heart was pounding, every nerve ending waiting to explode while they put the fire out. Kane tried to get to you, but you stood before he could make it and ran out the door. How could he be dead? He promised to come back to you. He promised.

Tears flooded your vision while you ran all the way down the building, keeping a shelter under a doorway. And there he was, up against the center of the city fountain, his body limp. “Roan!” You screamed for him, your arms wrapping around yourself and tugging at your sleeves. “Roan, wake up! Come back!”

You weren’t sure how long you stood there screaming for him, but finally, Echo came down and put a hand on your shoulder. “I’m so sorry. I love him, he will be remembered.”

You sniffled. “Yu gonplei ste odon. I love you forever, Roan.”
