A little treat…

Since I wasn’t able to post my Simply Alan Sunday post yesterday, here’s a little mini extra post for y'all. Again, I will be tagging from memory so forgive me if I don’t remember to tag you…

@mostlyrickman requested Alan winking and I was unable to find more than three of Alan doing so. I do hope y'all enjoy the ones I did find tho!

welcome-to-the-sin-zone:

oldshrewsburyian:

@alifeinfinitelystranger recently asked if Robin Hood Summer could be a thing, and, well… it already is, for me! and I would be very open to having others join me in Sherwood-related activities. Things I have done so far:

  • RewatchedThe Adventures of Robin Hood, wallowed in emotions (this film is mysteriously perfect)
  • Reread The Outlaws of Sherwood, glowed with pleasure (nostalgic and otherwise)
  • ReadLady of the Forest, had a lot of feelings (assorted)
  • StartedSherwood, found a historical howler (alas)

Things Robin Hood Summer could include:

  • Ballad readings
  • A week devoted to discussion of a particular film adaptation (I refuse to rewatch the 2018 Robin Hood; once was enough. On the other hand, there is no limit to the number of times I will watch 1938 Robin Hood.)
  • Other adaptations? I own those of Paul Creswick and George Cockburn Harvey
  • Tree-climbing challenges

So, if anyone else feels like being full mery in feyre foreste, answers on a postcard. Also, if anyone wishes to join @welcome-to-the-sin-zoneand@micewithknives in kindly recommending Robin Hood adaptations, I’d be interested (though I’m finding that my Medievalist Knowledge sometimes gets in the way of my Robin Hood Feelings.)

@oldshrewsburyian

How do you feel about “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” in particular? I’ve always had mixed emotions.

This film does not deserve Alan Rickman. I do not have the benefit of childhood nostalgia in watching this film, as when it came out, I was busy wearing out the VHS of Errol Flynn’s Robin Hood. But it’s so unhinged. It pairs well with drinking games and mindless enjoyment. It has druids who do lynchings (???) and a witch (???) and Kevin Costner wearing a quilt for some reason. But it also has plenteous greenwood shenanigans, and singing. Oh, and Brian Blessed for all too brief a time. I find it impossible to actually like Kevin Costner’s Robin, which is kind of sad, but I love Little John and Fanny enough to make up for it. And Morgan Freeman’s Azeem! Only divine grace and a habit of regular prayer can explain Azeem’s patience with Robin. Anyway, woe unto them who cannot find indulgence in their heart for a movie that ends with Sean Connery and a power ballad. Or de gustibus, I guess.
