Every time I watch Everything Everywhere All At Once, I appreciate something new, and today, I appreciated the way the film uses physical touch as a love language. In the beginning, Evelyn and Waymond barely touch and we see Waymond longingly look towards a couple that’s hugging and kissing and holding one other. This is illustrated through scenes where both Evelyn and Waymond and Evelyn and Joy are on opposite sides of the cars in pivotal conversations. And Becky snaps Joy out of it, in the intro washing machine scene, by grabbing her and kissing her. And Waymond dances with a disgruntled customer until they’re both happy. (How this dance is mirrored multiple times across multiple characters.) How Alpha-Waymond is clearly going through it seeing yet another version of his deceased love and how he shakily reaches towards Evelyn, as if restraining himself, and eventually giving in and cupping her face, holding her, etc. And these touches increase as the movie goes on. And Evelyn holds him, in the end. Evelyn confronting her father for letting her go. Joy asking Evelyn to let her go. The context of the movie letting you know that this would not be good. Evelyn grabbing onto Joy. Gong Gong grabbing onto Evelyn. Waymond grabbing onto Gong Gong. Them holding each other. Evelyn ending every confrontation with Waymond, Dierdre, and Joy by hugging them. Evelyn kissing Waymond in the last scene. There are probably more examples but this is enough serotonin to last me weeks!
