Santiam Pass is the gateway between the Willamette Valley and Central Oregon; a mountainous bridge from temperate rainforest to high desert steppe. Many of my favorite alpine ecosystems can be accessed from this pass, and when the snow begins to melt in Spring it opens up so many opportunities for wilderness exploration. The drive along the pass itself is often overlooked, but on a stormy day in the wake of a blizzard it’s cliffs and crags take on a truly magnificent quality.
