i can verify some of this. yes Marilyn was mentally, emotionally and physically abused by a lot of higher ups in Hollywood, but specifically experienced domestic abuse from Joe DiMaggio. I don’t believe the dress discussed here was a catalyst, as she was just divorced from Arthur Miller when she performed in that dress, BUT
The famous dress scene in The Seven Year Itch, when she stands over the subway grate, WAS a catalyst for an incident of abuse from DiMaggio. She had to have makeup to cover up her bruises the next day. Here is one article that details it
there’s also a documentary called The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe that goes into more detail about the abuse she faced not only from her husbands, but from many Hollywood execs.
