Thursday 21st April: Curator Melissa Miller interviews Dean Arlen, live on    Instagram.

Dean Arlen b. 1966. Based in Trinidad and Tobago, Dean Arlen is an installation artist, working both in the studio while proposing urban and rural social/cooperative art design installation/projects for communities. His studio work is influenced by people within their urban and rural environments.—“The work is persuaded by a constructivist methodology using machine technology, traditional knowledge and a keen reading of the socio-political landscape.I see the canvas surface as sculpting, building upon prior knowledge, carving, peeling, tearing-down to re-articulate a modern folkloric philosophy. The texture comes from tattered, peeled, rusted walls, a bureaucracy of infrastructure that has merged old-school craft styles with a modern aesthetic didacticism. The subjects in my pieces are influenced by gender fluidity/urban/national discourse in a deliberate attempt to challenge toxic masculinity, neoliberalism, and neo-conservative nationalist discourses.”-
