I have this (probably far-fetched, simplistic and insane) theory on the themes proposed by Ilúvatar to the Ainur for the arrangement of the Great Music. And that is, he actually set the themes to be the Seasons.

The 1st theme being Spring, which is when life flourishes. And Ilúvatar not only set the theme, but imbues the Ainur with inspiration to sing of it. And, receiving inspiration, they compose the Music. But Melkor, wanting to create his own arrangements, instead of singing of Spring does the exact antithesis, and sings of Autumn.

Then Ilúvatar presents the 2nd theme: Summer. And just as before, upon receiving inspiration, the Ainur sing of Summer. But again Melkor, in his greedy longing to devise his own instrumentation, sings the precise opposite, thus composing Winter.

The 3rd theme is clearly the Children, so there’s no doubt or speculation to be made on this one.

And that would be how Ilúvatar manages to incorporate Melkor’s discord into his ultimate symphony of Creation and, consequently, the history of Eä.

Call me delirious, I know this is an odd theory, but that crazy thought actually came from listening to Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” a while back.
