— Sowilo —

Sowilo translates as “sun” and means success and solace. Like the sun, it also represents life force and energy. Sowilo is also used to promote health, self-care, and acts as a catalyst for positive change.

As the sun is symbolically the ultimate source of fire, Sowilo also relates to fire, and stands at the opposite end of the spectrum from Isaz.

EDIT - 03/11/2022

I wanted to update the design for this page and add some clarification for my followers. My original page design featured elements from the Sunwheel, also known by the names “Sonnenrad” and “Black Sun”. The Sunwheel is one of many ancient symbols that were appropriated by the Nazi party and later by various white supremacist groups. Variants of “sunwheel” symbols appear in many ancient cultures, but the sunwheel symbol seen most often today—the one equated with the Black Sun symbol—is a modern creation by the Nazi party, and not a traditional Norse Symbol.

When I first started this project, I was still young in my journey towards understanding old norse symbols, and I’ll admit there’s probably still a lot that I don’t know. The sunwheel is an especially tricky symbol because hate groups have done such a good job of making it seem like it’s a legitimate ancient symbol, and not a bastardization that is maybe 100 years old at most. I 100% don’t blame new heathens, norse pagans, or just students of norse symbology in general for getting fooled by this one. I fell for it, too.

I was going to add my updated design as a reblog, but decided to edit my original post so this updated information is always connected to it moving forward. I believe in owning your mistakes, and that’s it’s okay to admit you didn’t have the same knowledge in the past that you do, now.
