Your favourite part of the day was when you got home after spending your afternoon studying at the library. It was normal for you to get lost in the subjects you had at hand and you were often the last person to leave the library. Some of your friends considered it a bad habit - something that you should grow out of - but it was thanks to all of your efforts that you had good grades and remained top of your class.
When you got home, more often than not, everyone was already asleep or in their rooms cramming for their next exam, completely focused. You tended to have dinner by yourself - your roommates usually left a small box with some food for you - but you didn’t mind the small routine.
However, this evening, when you got to your apartment, someone was still awake.
After taking off your jacket and shoes, and placing your house keys near the entrance bowl, you made your way to the living room where the TV flickered blue and purple hues as an action scene played in high intensity through the speakers. When you peeked inside, Soobin was laying on his side on the couch with his eyes closed. His arm was hanging with a pen in his hand and a notebook was dropped under it.
You smiled to yourself and slowly made your way towards him, pondering whether you should wake him up, or cover him with a blanket for the time being. When you got closer to him, you sighed and squatted next to him so your eyes could be on the same level.
“Soobin,” you said softly as you patted his shoulder. “Soobin, wake up.”
He mumbled something under his breath but didn’t move. You glanced at the pen in between his fingers and chuckled at the erratic lines it had left on his notebook. You grabbed the notebook and read a couple of the notes he had written down. Soobin was analyzing the movie playing on the TV. Or, at least, that was his goal.
You carefully tried to remove the pen from his hand, doing your best to not disturb him from his sleep. However, your best efforts went to waste when he slowly blinked and opened his eyes, the sleepiness not fading from them.
“Hi,” you said, biting your lower lip.
“Hi,” he replied in a low voice, glancing over your features softly. “Did you get home just now?”
“Yes.” You nodded. There was something oddly comforting about being this close to him. You didn’t want to move away. “You were sleeping. I thought it’d be best to wake you up. Were you… analysing the movie for one of your classes?”
Soobin slowly glanced between the TV and your eyes, pondering which one he should focus on. As much as you wanted to look away, your eyes traced the soft pout on his lips as he rubbed his face, slowly sitting on the couch.
“I have to analyse this by tomorrow. And the movie is… long and boring. That’s why I fell asleep.” He smiled at you. “Thanks for waking me up, though.”
You nodded and after getting back to a standing position, you started to make your way out of the living room, ready to get yourself some food.
“Y/N?” You stopped and turned to face Soobin, smiling. He gulped and ruffled his hair, making it even messier than it already was. “Would you mind joining me? If you’re not too tired, that is…”
You wanted to tell him that you were never too tired to spend time with him. If anything, being with Soobin made you feel happier, lighter. Being in the comfort of his presence melted all of your worries away. You wondered if he felt the same way towards you. If you were bold enough, you would ask him about it, but you weren’t ready to expose your feelings for him. Not when your friendship was wonderful and something you cherished deeply.
“I’ll join you, yes.” You offered him a reassuring smile and gestured to the door behind you. “Let me just go grab something to eat and I’ll be right back!”
It didn’t take you long to join Soobin in the living room again. After preparing yourself a bowl of food and bringing some soda and snacks for you and Soobin, you sat next to him on the couch, keeping your attention on the movie playing on the TV.
Soobin was right, the movie was boring. He kept taking notes and asked you questions about it, checking up on you with a smile or by moving slightly closer to you. It was a simple gesture, but one that made you smile tremendously. Of course, you didn’t let it show to him.
As the movie went on, you leaned your head on his shoulder, grabbing popcorn from the bowl on your lap every once in a while, and extending some at him too. He always smiled at you softly afterwards, his eyes lingering on you before he focused his attention back on the movie.
Still, despite your best efforts to stay awake, your eyelids were growing heavier and you knew you wouldn’t last until the end of the movie.
“I think I’ll nap now.” You said, closing your eyes. “Wake me up when the movie is over, ok?”
Soobin’s arm wrapped around your shoulders and he pulled you closer to him, making you snuggle on the crook of his neck, smiling softly to yourself.
“Why don’t you go to bed?” His voice was a kind whisper that brushed against your skin.
You shrugged softly and allowed your unfiltered thoughts to be expressed out loud. Being tired meant you had little to no filter, and in the safety of Soobin’s presence, no thought felt wrong to express.
“I like being like this with you,” you said. “It’s lovely.”
For a while, you thought Soobin hadn’t listened to your words. The sound of the movie took over your mind as you drifted into a soft sleep, Soobin’s warmth making you relax with each breath you took. It wasn’t until you felt a soft fabric brushing against your skin that Soobin’s voice rumbled next to your ear, making you smile.
“I like this too.” He kissed the top of your head, carefully fixing the blanket around your shoulders afterwards. “I like you a lot, actually.”
