Old art: The Dragon Years
Some of you might have heard I went through a dragon drawing phase. Well, it was actually a really intense and defining obsession that lasted seven years, and it all started when I was in year 5.
.
.
It was book week, and my year level all drew posters to put up around the school. I and one other kid had both drawn dragons, and my smug self thought I’d totally nailed it. There was a tiny knight standing on the dragon’s tail being roasted, and I put my extra special glow in the dark stickers on it because MaGiCkAl☄ I think it might have been the first time I was actually proud of my art!
.
Unfortunately not everyone agreed, and they said so! I had the words “Charlie’s dragon is better than yours” bouncing around my tiny skull for years to come I only drew dragons after that, trying to draw the best one possible. To say I was competitive is an understatement, my art was my entire self-worth at the time – I didn’t really take well to making friends and always craved alone time so I could just draw, read books and work on my universes and characters. I literally taught myself to read and write backwards so that no one could read what I was creating, it was my own hidden world safe from people and the outside world.
I gave the best dragon I ever drew to my brother who always loved my art, and the second best I sent in to a competition and it never came back
.
So here’s the tip of the iceberg folks! I think I literally drew thousands of dragons during that time, perhaps only pausing to draw the odd pokemon or neopet. Later in high school I tried to push myself to draw other things, namely people – and it was only in year 12 when that burning obsession finally dissolved and I might have only drawn two or three since!
