Virginia bluebells !!!

A quick scramble down a 25′ rock ledge takes one to this magical woodland place.

An ephemeral surprise each spring when the floodplain below the ledge our home is built on becomes a sea of blue.  A few pink and white one’s mingle in with the blue masses.

I saw this close to where I heard my first scarlet tanager of the year this morning, more data for my theory that lady slippers don’t turn pink until they hear the song of a tanager. You can’t prove me wrong! ;-)

Silene caroliniana: Carolina catchfly, American wild ink, sticky catchfly, whichever name you use this wildflower is hard to find in our area. These days I only know this one spot.

Happy Mothers Day to your mothers (or not: your discretion) and to those of you who are mothers! Years ago I knew several places I could find these birdsfoot violets but now the only place I know of is a spot my mother showed me when I was about ten. It’s on private property but I went there the other day, peered through the hedge, and used the camera zoom to get this picture of them blooming there among the bluets all these years later. I think she would be glad to know I’m still going there to find them. ❤️
