The Copenhagen free port between 1928 - 1934.
Loading of the American steamer S / S United States (Built in Glasgow in 1903)  Sister ship to S / S Hellig Olav, but with more 3rd class seats than this one.
A load of export beer in cardboard boxes, from Tuborg, has just arrived.
Due to declining passenger numbers, it was taken out of service in 1934.
S/S United States crossed the Atlantic 462 times.                                            July 25th 1935 she was sold to an Italian company for a sum of 24,000 pounds.
When it was understood that she would now be used by the Italians, as a troop  ship in the war in Abyssinia, the Communist Party of the Norwegian Seamen’s Association  discussed sabotaging the ship. The discussions did not lead to a decision, but three members took the matter into their own hands, which was approved by the board of the Danish Communist Party. They set the ship on fire, which caused damage of DKK 100,000: a considerable sum at the time.
After the sabotage, the ship was scrapped.
