Day 9

Reflections on: Creepy(2016)

  • Very cute dog.
  • Good suspenseful music which I think consisted of extremely low oboe and high discordant strings.
  • This reminded me a bit of Straw Dogs (1971) in that both movies are about a husband and wife who move to a new place and are uncomfortable with their surroundings yet remain where they are because they feel certain obligations to “make it work” and try too hard to be good neighbours. This isn’t a great plan. I’m sorry but fuck your neighbours.
  • Teruyuki Kagawa gives a great performance as the creepy man who lives next door. His posture looks uncomfortable and stiff. He hardly ever moves his shoulders and almost exclusively wears shorts. Bad news.
  • Some scenes have almost experimental, impressionistic lighting that changes in unnatural, unusual ways. One interrogation scene goes from full daylight to almost completely dark and back again and it’s not explained why or how. I liked it!
  • The story, acting, cinematography, clothing - really everything you see and hear in this was pretty great. I recommend watching this.
  • Japan you’ve done it again!
