I really dig the Sun Warriors. I love how you can see bits and pieces of their culture sprinkled throughout the Fire Nation’s identity. For example, you see that Azula’s wrap around skirt from Book 2 is pretty clearly inspired by the “pants” that the male Sun Warriors wear:
In turn, the Sun Warrior “pants” are inspired by the Khmer sompot chong kben (សំពត់ចងក្បិន): A lower body, wraparound cloth worn in Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand. These cloths are essentially wrapped in a way that resembles knickerbockers, which the Sun Warriors pair with a mustard colored loin cloth. Azula’s wrap is also a sampot chong kben, known as chong kraben (โจงกระเบน)in Thai, without the crotch part tucked in, as you can see demonstrated in the bottom left corner.
