“I—no, thank you.” He didn’t fancy beginning his day with public humiliation.
Aella entered his field of view, a wooden sword propped at a jaunty angle on her shoulder, and grinned at him. “You sure?” She lifted her shirt collar and wiped her face on the inside; the hem of her shirt rode up, baring her stomach.
Heat crept up Theo’s neck and he looked at her boots instead.

Stabling the horses didn’t take too long. She was just leaving the stables when she ran headlong into Meg. Formally, she was Tor Margaret, but Isi had earned ‘Meg’ privileges, an honour only afforded to the squires she’d mentored.
“Back in one piece. Good,” said Meg with a curt nod. Her iron-grey hair was pulled off her face into its customary tight bun.
Isi smiled. “I see you missed me very much.”
“Oh, absolutely.” Meg’s face didn’t change for a second. Then she smiled, a twinkle in her eye. “Welcome back, Isi. Do you have things to be getting on with? I’d better not keep you.”

Slowly but surely, the tide brought the thing nearer. At this rate, it was likely to run right into the Hurricane. She watched it longer, head on one side. Finally, it drew near enough for her to identify: a person, a young man, clinging to a plank of wood. No, not so much clinging to the log as sprawled on it. He might have been her age, perhaps a little older, but it was hard to tell with distance.
He looked to be hanging onto a ship’s plank. Maybe a deck plank. So he’d probably come from a sunken ship, or at very least the ship had run into trouble. They couldn’t just leave him to drift.

Robin scowled, the light from his fire casting uneven shadows across his face. “If it weren’t for this rain, I wouldn’t’ve had to use magic at all.”
“Why’s that so bad?” SB emptied out his other boot and set it by the fire, sole upwards.
Isi had to wonder the same thing. She wasn’t a mage herself, but it seemed like something one would want to use.
“Don’t wanna use it much?” mumbled Robin, wrapping his arms around himself.
“Surely you know you—”
“I don’t want to hurt anyone with it, alright?” Robin sat suddenly straighter, anger flashing in his eyes. “I’m dangerous. I—” He glanced uncertainly in Isi’s direction and fell silent, pressing his lips together.

Theo took Aella’s hand to help her to her feet. She stood, carefully, then threw her arms around his waist. He hugged her back, resting his chin on top of her head. She was here. In the flesh. He hardly dared believe it, but here she was, in his arms.
She was shaking, her shoulders heaving, and with a start he realised she was crying. He pulled back and crouched a little to look her in the eye. “Are you—” No, of course she wasn’t alright. He tried again. “Do you want to talk?”
Tears poured down her face and her lower lip trembled. She shook her head and hugged him again, bunching her hands into the back of his shirt. He returned the embrace as firmly as he dared. He was rather glad Tempest was going to make Grimmur pay. He’d never seen Aella so broken.
Whatever Grimmur had done to her… he deserved whatever Tempest did to him.
shattered (Dragonsong) (this was also in a scene I love from Hurricane, but it is deeply, deeply spoilery. so instead, here is a description of how Isi and Robin met)
Robin smiled wanly and returned his attention to the fire. Isi undid the clasp of her breastplate, sighing at the relief of the weight lifting off. Now that she’d said it aloud, she was sure of what she would do. She couldn’t be the one to turn Robin in, to kick him out of her house. Not after last year. Not after everything he’d been through.
Before squiring for Isi, Robin had squired for Brendon. But after the accident that shattered Robin’s leg, Brendon had tossed him out onto the street without so much as an ounce of sympathy.
Isi had been on patrol that night, walking past a tavern she walked past every night, on the border between Sectors Three and Four. She’d heard Brendon’s voice inside, his joking tone, and Robin’s name. She’d heard the laughter of the others around him. And when she’d turned away from the tavern wall, she’d seen Robin watching.

Isi set the axe down and wiped her brow. “Good work.”
Robin shrugged. “I think you did most of the hard work. I just waved my hands around a bit.”
“It was a very important waving of your hands.” She grinned.
The two of them had spent their afternoon dealing with a tree that had toppled under high winds the previous night. It was not the only tree that had fallen, but it was one of a handful that had landed on someone’s house. Robin had moved it off the roof with his magic—despite his claims that it was easy, she’d seen the sweat pouring down his face—and it had fallen to Isi to chop it into manageable pieces. While she worked, Robin had helped to put the house back together.
Now, faces smeared with dirt and sweat, they stood in front of a sizeable pile of firewood and a functional house.

She wouldn’t look back. If she did, she might fall apart, and she couldn’t. She had to stay strong, for her father. She wouldn’t look back.
As the pirate ship pulled away from the damaged Nasir, though, she did look back, fixing her eyes on her father one last time, before the gathering darkness swallowed him up. Was this price too high? No, she told herself. No price was too high to save her father. And he was safe.

I’d best go and say hello before he gets caught up in some mundane work.”
“I take it it’s been a little while.”
“Too long,” Henry agreed. “So please excuse me for breaking our conversation off so soon, but it’s very important I go kiss my husband.”

His next priority was her broken ribs. As though she’d heard his thought, she turned so her back was facing him. He undid the knot at the back of her shirt; her back was already bandaged, and this would be as good a time as any to check on her whipping wounds. He gently tugged at the edge of the blood-crusted bandage. She jumped, but otherwise didn’t move.
He winced as the bandages fell away. The whipping wounds were vicious, but at least they were healing. Whoever had bandaged her up hadn’t done too terrible a job, though ideally they should have been changed at least once since. No matter. He wet a new scrap of bandage to clean dried blood and a few stuck bandage fibres away. The bullet graze on her side was relatively shallow, fortunately. He cleaned that too.

I’ve been playing D&D today, so here’s my grumpy girl Enna. (I was SO THRILLED to find out the picrew had a longbow.)
Enna is a level 6 ranger, soon to be level 7 if we survive this boss fight. she’s grumpy and closed off … aspiring to edgy, but doesn’t quite have the charisma to support it. she’s very petty: she remembers every insult she’s ever received (and she’s 214, so there’s quite a few), and pays all her debts, good and bad. also she hates crossbows with a passion. she doesn’t think they’re real bows.
in addition, she is currently trying to make friends with the party’s rogue. this would go better if either of them knew how friendship works. currently it’s like … “here is sad backstory, will this make friends?”

Amount of sleep: I’m tired a lot but I sleep very little. I can’t sleep more than a few hours at a time. I wake up nearly every hour throughout the night but always manage to wake up at the same time regardless of what time I go to sleep. The most I’ll sleep at a time is probably 4-6 hours. 4 is my average but there’s been a few rare occurrences of 5-6 after being awake for over 72 hours
Lucky number: 13, it runs in the family on my dads side
What I’m wearing: gym shorts and a tank top
Dream job: do I even have one anymore? How sad. Honestly I would love to have a job that has me working with any kind of animals, or with books, or even writing/editing

One day, my sister checked out the Sims 4 from the library on a whim. We didn’t expect much, because we were under the impression that it was pretty much just a Marriage And Baby simulator.
Then we created a little gremlin man that ran around clogging drains, implying mothers are llamas, and performing voodoo. We loved it. My mom bought me the PC version for Christmas and I’ve been simming ever since. My sister, not so much lmao

in elementary school, a friend had ts1 and for whatever reason I thought it was so fun when I played it at her house that I got it too. then ts2 and ts3 but I fell off playing in high school. I actually didn’t return to the franchise until covid hit and I had way more free time than I knew what to do with and decided to try ts4.
aside from the sims I’m not a video game person, like I’m never interested enough in any game to pick it up again after I play it once. I think this game keeps me hooked because I truly love storytelling and the sims gives me the ability to do that
Caveat, I’m an older simmer and was in high school when Sims 1 was released. One of my good friends had the game and her parents were going through a rough divorce. She was very angry and made a sim of her dad and locked him in a tiny apartment alternately depriving him of food and bathroom access and letting him get to the point of death and reviving/rehabbing him. I remember knowing about the game before that, but not anything specific.
In college, my friend’s dorm had an xbox hooked up to the common tv and someone had a copy of TS2 base game. I decided to give it a shot and found it very dull to have a sim make dinner and then do her dishes. I remember wondering what the point was, I could make a dinner I could eat and then do real dishes if I wanted to.
I didn’t really get into it until after I had my first kid. I was very lonely, my husband was working swing shifts that didn’t get him home until after midnight and it seemed like all I did was nurse the baby. My mom gave me $50 and told me to get something fun for myself. I don’t know why, but I got a bundle on steam of TS3 Base Game + Show Time. I made two sims and had one become a singer while the other did the music career. They both topped their careers then fell in love and got married. I popped the top of their bungalow and renovated it. Then I got bored of them and kept playing TS3 obsessively until 2020 when my computer refused to load my legacy and I decided to see what TS4 was all about.
I still prefer lots of things about TS3 gameplay. But I’m having a lot of fun with TS4. I’m primarily a builder and a CAS player as I find the gameplay doesn’t hold my attention very well. I’ve dabbled in storytelling, but find it less fun than making CC.
I’ll just add my story below the cut, to keep the post from getting too long~
I started playing The Sims when my dad bought the base game and the Vacation expansion back in 2002, for my seventh birthday, hahaha. Until that point, I’d only ever played educational computer games, so playing The Sims was a whole new world for me. Over the years, the Sims games introduced me to so many things, like a love for architecture and interior design styles, new bands and musical artists, and a place to explore and discover my own sexuality.
The games also helped me form a bond with my eventual best friend when I was the new kid at school. When TS2 and its expansions started releasing, we would ask our parents to buy us different packs and then share them with each other (don’t tell EA).
I actually stopped playing around when TS3 came out, partly because I couldn’t afford it, and partly because I was in a different place in my life.
A few years ago I got back into the games by playing TS4, and as I jumped into the world of making CC and having The Sims be a part of my life again, I kind of feel like I’m rediscovering a part of myself that I had forgotten.
