I don’t know why but I always had the headcanon that Derek’s dad was the carpenter that built the Hale house. He and Talia fell in love while he was building the house.

I imagine Peter and Talia lost their parents when they were young and the work on the house had just begun, so Talia had to step up and raise her little brother. And then when she fell in love, she was worried that Peter would feel rejected, but she didn’t have to worry because her future husband stepped up and helped look after Peter–he’d bring them pizza when Talia was working late, picked Peter up from school when he got in trouble and made sure he knew how lucky he was that his sister didn’t pick him up, taught Peter how to drive… all the things that Peter did for Derek after his dad passed away.
