At this time of year, returning tawny owls to their nest is quite a common activity for our rescuers… this particular rescue, however, proved quite different!
Our team were recently called to help a young tawny owl chick that had been found on the ground at the base of a tree. Unfortunately, the equipment they had with them was not powerful enough to reach the branch needed and the decision was made to retry the next morning…
With ecologist Dan in tow (from Simlaw ecology), the team returned to find another owl on the ground! Unfortunately, the adult owl had not built a particularly good nest and our team had to rebuild it to get the chicks back with mum!

This fluffy youngster is a young tawny owl, and it was brought into us after being found on the ground with damage to its beak. Sadly, owing to the nature of its injuries, it was not fit to return to the nest.
Although initially expecting superficial damage, an examination by our vet team found something much more concerning - the beak was fractured across its width and needed veterinary intervention to repair.
With the bird under anaesthetic, Maru sutured a hydrocolloid dressing over the wound before covering the beak with a special dental acrylic. Once set, this will support the fracture, allowing it to heal without causing further damage.
We are still in the early days of recovery, but signs are good so far and we hope this little one will make a full recovery!
