Two years ago I took screenshots of a page of the third book Die for Me by Luke Jennings and I just found them on my phone

“WHEN SHE FIRST LOOKED INTO MY EYES AS VILLANELLE, OXANA RECOGNISED SOMETHING THAT IT WOULD TAKE TIME FOR ME TO UNDERSTAND. THAT WE WERE FUNDAMENTALLY THE SAME.”

Phoebe Waller-Bridge said something similar about their first encounter

“WHEN THEY LOCKED EYES WITH EACH OTHER IN THE FIRST EPISODE… I DECIDED THAT WAS THE MOMENT - IT WAS LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT. IT WAS A CONNECTION WHETHER THEY KNEW WHAT IT WAS […] EVE FEELS THE SAME AND THAT’S THEIR FIRST INSTINCT.”

Both source material state how Villanelle and Eve are the same and that their relationship is more than obsession, it’s love!

SO HOW FUCKING STUPID DOES LAURA NEAL HAVE TO BE TO GO OUT OF HER WAY TO DISREGARD EVERYTHING THAT CAME BEFORE AND SAY VILLANEVE AREN’T THE SAME AND THIS OBSESSION NEEDED TO END BECAUSE ALL VILLANELLE WANTS IS CONTROL OVER EVE???? I FUCKING HATE HER.

@floorpan91, I think that op means these two conversations (correct me if I’m wrong, op):

And you might say, “Well these? Cases of an unreliable narrator.” Clearly,

  • Carolyn is saying a lot of things to manipulate Villanelle so that Villanelle will trust/spare her, which she does because she is such a psychopath (/s),
  • Villanelle has literally -5 control over Eve at that point. In fact, you could claim that the exact opposite is true. In early season 4, Villanelle stomps on her dignity and pride more than once and asks for help (Eve, Martin), ‘cause she’s trying to change (also see her season 3 arc). She’s very much in love and vulnerable and at Eve’s mercy. When Eve has her arrested, she does not resist or fight the cops, ‘cause she decides to follow Martin’s advice about healthy relationships.

Well, one’d think that. They’d think that Villanelle is an unreliable narrator in both cases, but given that Ms. Laura called Villanelle “a psychopath” that “is meant for destruction” post 4x08, I wouldn’t put it past her and Ms. Sally (and the team in general) to claim that Villanelle had the same power over Eve that she had back in early season 1 and that she couldn’t neurotypically love her (although her actions in both 3x08 and 4x08 said otherwise).

And, like, no. Villanelle is not a psychopath.

Had they not used Hollywood’s perception of psychopathy, they wouldn’t have had Martin give that speech about psychopaths. They would have had him talk about Villanelle’s:

  • antisocial personality disorder,
  • narcissistic personality disorder,
  • signs of depression.

Does Villanelle have psychopathic traits? Yes. Is she a psychopath? No. Does she have control over Eve in season 4? Also no. Unless you count the loveEve has for her as control.

And it gets even funnier, because Eve has severalsociopathic traits, has murdered people, and yet, is not called a sociopath. Carolyn has several psychopathic traits, has murdered people, and is not called a psychopath. Funny how that works.

Oh, yes, I had forgotten. Eve is an “extraordinary everyday woman” and “meant for a normal life.” She was coerced into killing Lars, clawing Gunn’s eyeballs out, using and manipulating people, stabbing Villanelle etc.

Carolyn and Villanelle “are very much alike,” and yet Carolyn is not a psychopath. She’s the winner of the series. That she had some really off lines in 4x08 is besides the point.
