Both the strengh and the weakness of the Iznogoud comic is that it leans so much into orientalism tropes that it becomes a parody of it. Tabary himself said that he never tried once to look at historical stuff to design the world. It’s completely 1001 nights fairy-tale anachronistic silly fun. Now, if I were to adapt Iznogoud into a feature length movie, I think I’d go full-force with the anachronism, using magic as an excuse to make Baghdad as developped as possible, but still keeping some vegas-style middle eastern inspiration. That way, it’s less orientalist, and it can go more into political satire that the comic delved into here and there.
