My new dnd character is a nimble halfling fighter who specializes in dual scimitars like a whirling dervish (and is pretty mean with a longbow). She’s a history buff and a hobbyist blacksmith with special interests in metallurgy and the academic side of combat. She’s got a prosthetic clockwork arm

She grew up in a halfling/gnome community and thus has the halflings’ love of family, community, and the comforts of home, as well as the gnomes’ cheerful joking nature, inclination towards mechanical tinkering, and lust for life.

Though she enjoys history and combat, she doesn’t care much for military history. Her go-to subjects to infodump about are her arm she constantly tinkers with and the mechanics of combat–she has a habit of talking about combat techniques and stances /during/ combat.

She has a pipe that blows bubbles that she got as a kid. She wanted to join her friends and family as they smoked their own pipes but was too young to do so. Her mother made the pipe for her so she could join, and she still uses the pipe to this day.

She’s 2'11" (89cm) tall and weighs 39lb.

What I have for Adalgrin “Addy” Nimblefoot so far:

–Grew up in a halfling/gnome community and so has the halflings’ love of family, community, and the comforts of home, as well as the gnomes’ cheerful joking nature, inclination towards mechanical tinkering, and lust for life; not used to people twice her height. Halflings typically have a given name, family name, and occasionally nickname, but gnomes often give each other numerous names, so she picked up quite a few from her gnome friends, community members, and relatives:

–Family name: Laughshield
–First names: Adalgrin (halfling given name), Marnda, Jaesi, Bodi, Estella, Lidda
–Nicknames: Nimblefoot, Quicktalker, Swiftcog, Flip-Spinner, Springheart, Rainleaf

–Addy was born without a right arm and was given a series of rudimentary prosthetics as she grew, but she wanted to keep improving them, so she learned tinkering and engineering from the gnomes in her community and made herself better and better arm designs.
–A traveling band of performers came to her town, with minstrels playing music and telling story, acrobats performing and juggling. There was also a martial artist who demonstrated breaking wood and stone with their hand. Addy was amazed that feats like that were possible and realized she wanted to see more. She went to the fencing dueling performance that was held later that day, and it changed her life forever. Addy was enthralled by the grace and style of the fencers and marveled at their technique. It was a beautiful and intricate dance with flashing swords, and that was the moment when she knew that that would be her life’s calling.
–Addy left her town to study combat at the nearby college, but it was mainly theory; learned applications from a few mentors there but couldn’t advance any further due to systemic barriers (prejudice re: size, disability, gender), so she left to learn more on her own
–The author of the letter Addy has was her favorite mentor, who argued on her behalf against prejudiced higher-ups for every advancement she made
–One reason she joined up with this party is that it’s two halflings, a kenku, and a dragonborn, so Racial Prejudice is less likely to occur

–She has a habit of talking about combat techniques and stances /during/ combat
–Ableism angers her to no end–she dealt with it for years growing up.
–Bullying, particularly towards the weak and small, is another Big Issue for Addy; in her halfling/gnome community, there was virtually no infighting, but occasionally merchants or travelers would say or do some shit–literally talking down to people
–She is infuriated by being dismissed out of hand bc of disability, size, etc; constantly has to prove her abilities but also has to fight to be given the chance to prove herself
–Annoyed when other people pun better than her; annoyed by literal bookworms and Ivory Tower pretentious snoots
–She would love to have fidget spinners and other devices on her swords (and does have a few on her arm)
–Addy is unnerved by flashy destructive magic; minor arcana and illusions were common (especially with gnomes), but grand displays of power and force are Too Much
–She has a pipe that blows bubbles that she got as a kid. She wanted to join her friends and family as they smoked their own pipes but was too young to do so. Her mother made the pipe for her so she could join, and she still uses the pipe to this day.

She’s on a quest to learn more about combat and fighting and to hone her skills, as well as protect those in need along the way, being Neutral Good. She cannot keep a secret to save her life or anyone else’s. She’s currently 30 years old.

“To live in this world you must be able to do three things: to love what is mortal; to hold it against your bones knowing your own life depends on it; and, when the time comes to let it go, to let it go.”
