If you can, pick up the incredible “The Flight of Dragons” (1979) by Peter Dickinson, with illustrations by Wayne Anderson.

It’s a speculative biological work with great illustrations that goes in depth on how dragons would work in scientific terms as biological life forms. Dragon wings evolved as an extension of the ribcage; their flight is based on generating lifting gas by using hydrochloric acid in their body to dissolve their fast-growing bones, creating lifting gas to use throughout. This acid also explains why no bones of dragons survive.
