“It’s reached the edge of the wood!” a call from above sounded and all heads snapped to watch the trees. Paw-like hands tightened on ballistae and casting implement alike. The entire wall held its breath.
Out from the woods came a tiny figure running full-tilt. Still round and plump, not yet the age where his limbs would stretch with adolescence, and his fur a greyish-brown fluffy mess. My eyes widened in shock.
“It’s a pup!” I cried. “Hold!” I turned to run down the stairs to the gate when Lashley caught me by one arm.
“It’s not alone!” Crashing out from the trees behind the small ball of fur, splintering tree trunks a foot thick like they were nothing, came a manticore. Its twisted, almost-human visage let loose a haunting yowling roar, the rattling of its spiked tail and mane against the chitinous armor plating on its back and sides audible now that it was free of the muffling plant-life of the forest.
